Abstract

The fingernail plays a important role in fascilitating tactile sensibility, tip pinching of finger pulp, in tip scratching and protection of the finger pulp and also has esthetic importance.
As advancement of reconstructive method, the restoration of partial or total nail defect with free flap or toe transfer has been reported and it is now considered to be best method.
We performed the fingernail reconstruction by free transfer of the toenail in 7 cases in 6 patients. Among them, 6 cases were transfered as osteo-onychocutaneous flap and only one case was transfered as onychocutanous flap. 3 cases.were performed primarily, and 4 cases were performed secondary to the groin flap with debulking procedure.
The results were follows
1) Transfered nail grows normally with minimal atrophy and deformity.
2) Donor site was closed primarily with redundant plantar skin so left minimal functional and cosmetic impairment.
3) In the delayed reconstruction cases, debulking procedure of groin flap was performed simultaneously.
4) Fingernail and dorsal soft tissue defect was reconstructed by one stage operation.
